About
The Blog
In one place or another, I’ve been blogging for over a year. I’ve always got grand intentions about steam-lining and focusing content, intentions that keep me on the verge of chunking this blog and starting another. But I’ve accepted that, while I may get to that kind of writing one of these days, that’s really not what this blog is about. For the Record is really just a place to get stuff down, not get stuff right. Basically, I write about what I love, what holds my interest, and what confounds me.
Me
I’m a full-time, stay-at-home mom to a beautiful two-year-old named Caelyn.
I’m also a wife, to Chris, a web/graphic designer who’s talented enough to get to work for himself and be at home with us (and our dog, Maverick) every day.
Even in “retirement,” I like to consider myself a writer and a poet. I’m a lover of music and books, and I’m a definite victim of the television sitcom. I’m passionate about language; I like helping people communicate what they really mean to say. My friends accuse me of having an incredible memory and being a nerd. I’m a Romantic and an Idealist, but most of the time, I’m also laid-back and sarcastic. Cupcakes and queso get me excited. I’m a Christian. I like stuff like cooking and decorating. I don’t like stuff like working out and laundry, but I do them. Deep down I’m a slob, but I usually keep it in check. I’m shy at heart, but not a lot of people realize it. And although I wish I was hanging out in Stars Hollow or Mayberry, if you’re looking for me, you can probably find me in my DFW apartment.
My Favs (in case you’re into that kind of thing)
It doesn’t seem like I watch that much TV, but, somehow, I’ve watched enough to last a lifetime. And I’m prone to quoting my favorite lines and dropping in allusions without warning. (When in doubt, consult The Andy Griffith Show, Gilmore Girls, Arrested Development, The Office, The Cosby Show, and/or Seinfeld.) Having my own TV Series Marathon is one of my favorite pastimes. When left to my own devices, I’m big on comedy and “junk” TV, but my husband manages to get me into dramas like LOST too.
I enjoy watching movies. I enjoy reviewing movies too. But I enjoy the experience of watching more than the movie itself. I’ve never picked a favorite movie. I’ve never made a list of favorite movies. I’m not even exclusive to a genre or era. But I’m certainly vocal about what I don’t like.
I’ve got an MA in English/Creative Writing, and I go through spells of reading like crazy and then not being able to get into a book for the life of me. Fiction’s my thing, but whenever I get interested in a new project, I’ll read as much as I can about it until the passion fizzles. I like checking out new authors, but I always go back to favorites like Fitzgerald, Salinger, O’Connor, and Faulkner. The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye are my all-time favorites.
Of all the “stuff” I’m into, music is the one thing I wouldn’t want to live without. I grew up in a home with strict rules about what media was acceptable, so I didn’t get into music until college. Once the doors were opened, I found out I’d been an addict all along. I started out trying to catch up on the years I’d lost, while still staying on top of the “now.” I bought hundreds of albums a year. The truth is, I still would, if I didn’t have a family to consider. I’m really into pop, indie rock, and oldies. Sometimes I even enjoy a little hip-hop. And, while I don’t buy as many albums a year, I still try to keep up with what’s new and my favorite bands, like Spoon, Centro-matic, Belle & Sebastian, Elliott Smith, and The Beach Boys. I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
